A recent survey by language learning platform Preply reveals that over 64 million Americans avoid traveling to destinations where they need to speak a foreign language. Despite acknowledging the importance of learning basic phrases before traveling abroad, only 58% of Americans actually do so. China, Japan, and South Korea are among the most intimidating destinations due to their unique writing systems and tonal languages. Surprisingly, France also ranks high on the list, possibly due to cultural perceptions. The main barriers to learning local languages include difficulty, reliance on English, negative school experiences, lack of time, and fear of causing offense. However, those who make the effort report smoother navigation, enjoyable interactions, and a stronger cultural connection during their travels. (Studyfinds)
